Two gaps in the RAF Museum’s collection of First World War aircraft will be filled during the summer, with the arrival in the UK of reproductions of a Royal Aircraft Factory RE.8 and an Albatros D.Va. Built in the workshops of The Vintage Aviator Ltd at Wellington, New Zealand, the aircraft flew at the Anzac WW1 air show at Hood Aerodrome, near Masterton, New Zealand, on April 28, 2012, and it is hoped they may make late season flying appearances at Shuttleworth Collection shows at Old Warden before going to Hendon. An RAF Museum spokesman said: “During this Royal Flying Corps centenary year, it would be great to fly these two aeroplanes in public a couple of times before they go on display at the Grahame-White Hangar here at Hendon.” Only two genuine examples of each type survive, with RE.8s at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford, and the Belgian Royal Army Museum in Brussels, and Albatros D.Vas at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington DC, and the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. |
