In the summer of 2005 a small memorial plaque was unveiled at the Newark Air Museum in memory of the crew of a 619 Squadron Lancaster ME846, which crashed in northern Belgium in June 1944; this crew had trained with 1661 HCU at RAF Winthorpe in spring 1944.
In 2006 a larger memorial was unveiled at Mol Postel in northern Belgium, close to the aircraft crash site. The precise location of the crash site has never been found, nor have the remains of the pilot and the search for an answer to this mystery continues.
The memorial plaque at the museum is being moved into a new position, which will allow some additional information to be displayed about the project to locate the aircraft and the remains of the missing pilot ‘Captain Davis’. On September 27th relatives and friends of the ME846 crew-members will gather at the museum to re-dedicate the memorial plaque. This will be followed by a flypast by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Lancaster at 2.30pm.
