Anson crash

Q Colin Urry asks for details of an Anson on a newspaper flight which crashed after hitting a radar mast at RAF Ventnor — he believes on Coronation Day, 1953.

A Reference to Wight Air Wrecks (A.T. Gilliam, Tempus, 2002) shows it as Anson G-AIWW, formerly MG569 which gained its C of A on November 15, 1947, and crashed five days later. It left Croydon with newspapers for the Channel Islands with pilot E.G. Snowden and radio operator R.J. Corrie but nearing the Isle of Wight encountered 10/10ths cloud at 700ft and, off course, crashed on St Boniface Down. Both crew died and the accident enquiry recorded an error of navigation as cause of the crash.
